Sharks Cove in Summer

What is the difference in water and wave conditions by season in Oahu?

Sharks Cove is accessible throughout the year, with the best snorkeling in summer months. Please note that big waves can show up year round so be aware of the ocean conditions before getting in the water. You do not want to enter the bay or into sharks cove when the waves are big.

How deep is the water in the Cove?

The water depth is about 20 to 35 feet. There is big “rock” int he cove but please remember the “rock” is alive with coral and algae. It is best not to stand there. Do not stand on any rock in the water or it will kill them. The creatures that live on the rocks are food for Honu (the Hawaiian sea turtles).

Is it safe for children & non-swimmers?

Not really. It is deep and there is sharp lava rock when entering from the beach. If you don’t know how to swim or never been snorkeling before or are with small children we do not recommend going in solo. Guided snorkeling tour ensure your safety and that you have a happy time. Click here to see the Turtle cove (Sharks cove) guided snorkeling tour) NOTE: there is NO lifeguard on duty at sharks cove.

Why is it called Sharks Cove?

There are tons of sharks, just kidding ;). I haven’t seen any shark at Sharks Cove so we call it “turtle cove” because it home of Honu, or Hawaiian Sea Turtle. People speculate that the area is called ”

sharks cove” because the outline of a reef outside the cove looks like a shark when seen from above.
